The Truth About Anxiety
First of all, feeling anxious (especially about the unknown) is perfectly normal. So, there’s no need to be embarrassed about the way you feel. Some folks get nervous about regular cleanings and examinations. Other people become anxious only upon learning that they will need a root canal treatment or a more intricate procedure. Your dental anxiety could even be rooted in a bad experience with a dentist when you were younger.
It matters not what causes this, what really matters is that, at 1st In Smiles, we have what it takes to put those kind of fears to rest.
Dental Sedation Options
As a way to make you feel more at ease, we offer three forms of dental sedation here. The best bet for you may depend on the severity of your dental anxiety and the specific treatment you are anticipating.
Nitrous oxide is the quickest form of dental sedation. You simply inhale the “laughing gas,” and you will feel its effects within minutes. You will continue breathing it until your procedure is finished. Then you are good to go!
Oral sedation takes it deeper. We may recommend this option for someone with more severe anxiety. You will take a dose of medication prior to your appointment. By the time you are in the chair, you may not be aware of what is happening. You won’t remember much, and you won’t be in any shape to drive when it is over.
IV sedation is the strongest type around. And make no mistake, this is not something that will be available at every area dental office. It can only be administered by individuals like Dr. Barfield who have completed a rigorous certification process. We typically reserve this for longer and more complicated procedures. Again, you’ll need to find a ride home!
