With Halloween being right around the corner, today seems like an opportune time to talk about fear. What are you afraid? Spiders? The IRS? Something more mythical like a werewolf or vampire? Maybe it’s vampires that send shivers down your spine.

It can actually be kind of fun to be scared. That’s why we pay to see scary movies in the theatre. Or why we take a trip to a local haunted attraction. But we hope there’s at least one thing in life that’s you’re not afraid of – a trip to our office.

Millions of Americans suffer from some type of fear of the dentist. This can lead then to avoid making a dentist appointment. As a result, many small dental problems can morph into larger issues. Even a small cavity can become infected. This can lead to tremendous pain and discomfort.

At 1st In Smiles in Plano, TX, we want our patients enjoy visiting our office. We are experienced in providing care to nervous and fearful patients. For that reason, we offer sedation dentistry to our patients. We offer different levels of sedation to fit your needs and make you feel more comfortable. In today’s post of our dental health blog, we’re going to tell you more about these tremendous options.

Nitrous Oxide Sedation

Nitrous oxide is often called laughing gas because it induces an almost ‘happy drunk’ type of feeling in patients. Nitrous oxide sedation is completely safe and clean. It can even be a great option for nervous or fearful children.

With nitrous oxide sedation, we attach a small nose piece to you. Then you breathe in a clean and safe mixture of oxygen and nitrous oxide. Almost immediately you will feel relaxed and comfortable. You will likely feel less aware of your surroundings, but you will be able to respond to instructions for your dentist.

We offer nitrous oxide for free for all treatments. From teeth whitening to a more complex procedure like a root canal, you can feel relaxed. This allows us to complete your treatment in less time and with less stress on your mouth.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation is also available if you prefer a stronger form of sedation. With oral sedation, we actually prescribe you a sedative medication to take before your procedure. By the time your treatment begins, you will feel completely relaxed and at-peace. You likely will experience “time-loss” and not remember much of your procedure. You will need someone to drive you home from your appointment.

IV Conscious Sedation

IV sedation is also safe, effective, and available in our office. With IV sedation, we can easily control the level of sedation you are feeling during your procedure. This allows us to adjust them as needed. You will feel as if you are asleep and will not remember the procedure. IV sedation lasts longer than nitrous oxide sedation so you will need someone to drive you home after your procedure.
