tooth ache of a girl

Welcome back to another blog from your friends at 1st In Smiles. Our team located in Plano, TX, where we help patients just like you achieve high levels of dental health and comfort. But our area of expertise can help you deal with your headache too. If you are suffering from frequent headaches due to some unexplained reason, it could be dental related. Below we talk about three reasons why you may be experiencing headaches … and about what we can do to help! Please feel free to contact our team any time if you have questions or concerns.

You may experience frequent headaches if:

Reason #1: You Are Suffering From Bruxism.

Bruxism is a common cause of headaches. Bruxism is where you grind or clench your teeth unconsciously, creating a lot of pressure in your jaw, face, and head. It can also damage your teeth! It is not uncommon that bruxism sufferers have to have crowns placed to repair the damage done by their grinding.

The thing about bruxism is that anyone can get it. And typically, the cause is psychological, not physiological (though there are physical consequences of course). No matter what your age or gender, bruxism could be a problem for you. You may do it while you work or even at night. Visit us for an examine if you think that bruxism (grinding or clenching your teeth) could be the cause of your discomfort.

Reason #2: You Have a Bad Bite.

Another problem that may cause headaches is a bad bite. This means that your teeth do not line up properly. This can cause stress and pressure throughout your head … resulting in headaches. Bite problems can be inherent or can be caused by damage to your teeth. A full examination is necessary to determine whether or not bite problems are at the root of your discomfort.

Reason #3: You Have Stressed or Injured Your TMJ.

Headaches can also be brought on by generalized stress or damage to the jaw joint (TMJ). Your TMJ and the muscles surrounding it are connected to many areas of your face and head. Stress or injury to any part of it can cause headaches. Have you been in a car accident lately or may have someone otherwise done damage to the joint? Give us a call for a full examination to help you determine if this could be your issue.

How We Can Help

If you are suffering from headaches, we can help alleviate your symptoms with an oral appliance. This appliance could come in the form of a occlusal splint or a nightguard, depending on your specific needs. These appliances are custom made to fit your mouth and will take the pressure off of your TMJ. Bite problems can sometimes even be treated using Invisalign, our clear aligner orthodontic system. Contact our team for specifics on how we can help you.
