Gum Disease Treatment

Gum Disease Treatment in Plano, TX

Gum disease, or periodontal disease, is a common oral health problem that’s caused by bacteria buildup, which forms plaque and eventually leads to inflammation in your gums. Studies show it affects up to half of American adults! Recent research has even linked advanced gum disease to serious health problems, such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, cancer, kidney disease, and respiratory infections.

As frightening as all of this sounds, the good news is that gum disease is preventable, treatable, and even reversible, especially in its early stages.

Dr. Rick Barfield and our staff care about ensuring healthy smiles, and that’s why we’re committed to providing the best gum disease treatment possible in Plano, TX.

Gingivitis is early stage gum disease. Its symptoms are mild or even absent, so you may not even know you have it at first. Gingivitis is characterized by gum inflammation caused by plaque buildup on and beneath the gums. This inflammation may make your gums bleed easily or feel tender when you brush your teeth. It can also make them appear swollen or red. As gingivitis progresses, you may also notice chronic bad breath and sensitivity to hot or cold foods and drinks.

At this stage, there is no tooth loss, bone loss, tissue loss, or other permanent damage. Gingivitis can be easily treated by proper home hygiene, including brushing your teeth twice daily and flossing once every day, as well as getting regular, professional cleanings at 1st In Smiles.

Gum Disease (Periodontal Disease)

Gum Disease Treatment | 1st in Smiles - Plano, TX DentistIf left untreated, gingivitis can turn into to periodontitis, or advanced gum disease. Your gums will begin to pull away from your teeth, creating pockets that bacteria get trapped in. This leads to more inflammation and infection, triggering your immune system to begin fighting the infection, which, along with the bacteria, causes your bones and tissues beneath your teeth to weaken. This can lead to your teeth separating from your gums, possibly requiring tooth extraction; bone and tissue loss; and increased risk of developing the serious health conditions listed above.

Safe, Effective Gum Disease Treatment at 1st In Smiles

Whether your gum disease is in its early or advanced stage, your 1st In Smiles skilled dentist and staff are trained to recognize the signs of gum disease to provide the treatment and relief you need to restore your smile. We use the latest technology, including digital X-rays and our intraoral camera, to detect gum disease so that we can treat it appropriately.

Deep Cleaning (Scaling and Root Planing)

One of the most common therapies used to treat gum disease is deep cleaning, also known as scaling and root planing. After carefully numbing the affected area of your mouth, we’ll use our instruments to clean the plaque from your teeth and tartar buildup around and under your gums (scaling) and remove rough areas where bacteria is at in the tooth root (planing), which brushing and flossing by itself is unable to do. This will get rid of the infected areas so that your gums are able to heal.

Advanced Atridox® System

Sometimes deep cleaning is not enough to eliminate the bacteria in your roots. This is when we might also use Atridox®, an antibiotic that we place directly in the infected gum pockets. The antibiotic will release slowly over a period of several days as it gets rid of your infection and heals your gums.
