Safe Tooth Removal or Extractions in Plano, TX

1st In Smiles knows the importance of keeping your natural teeth whole and healthy. Sometimes, however, it’s necessary to conduct a tooth removal or teeth extraction after other options, like a root canal, are no longer sufficient to save your teeth.

Do I Need an Extraction?

You may need to have your tooth removed for several reasons:

  • When your tooth is severely injured or has suffered trauma
  • When you tooth is so badly decayed or broken that it cannot be restored
  • When a tooth becomes impacted because it is prevented by gum tissue, bone, or other teeth from growing into its normal position (e.g., wisdom teeth)
  • To make more room in your mouth before straightening your remaining teeth because your tooth is so badly positioned that straightening is impossible

If your tooth is injured, broken, or badly decayed or diseased, you may experience oral pain or a toothache, a signal that you should come into our office as soon as possible.

Tooth Removal Procedure

First, Dr. Barfield will examine you and take digital X-rays to get an incredibly clear picture of your mouth. These images will assist our team in planning your extraction safely and accurately. If no other options can save your tooth, Dr. Barfield will discuss the process of extraction with you and have his staff set up your appointment.

Tooth removal and extractions can usually be performed with local anesthesia so that the area around your tooth is numb throughout the procedure. Many of our patients enjoy listening to music or watching their favorite TV show during their appointment. If you are afraid of pain or have a fear of needles, you can relax completely and painlessly during the procedure with our sedation options.

If you have an exceptionally difficult case, Dr. Barfield might bring a specialist into the office so that you can get the best care possible without having to run around for your procedure.

You may experience some soreness after your treatment, which will go away quickly. We’ll give you some instructions for home care so that your mouth heals as quickly as possible. We’ll also set up a follow-up visit to make sure your gums around your extraction are in good shape and that, if your tooth was removed due to decay, your surrounding teeth remain decay-free.

The Importance of Regular Checkups

It’s important to come in for regular cleanings and checkups so that we can prevent extractions and catch problems early, when there may be other options available to save your tooth. If you haven’t been to the dentist in a while and are ashamed about the condition of your teeth now, you don’t need to worry about being humiliated or lectured here. Our friendly, caring dental team only wants to give you the best solutions to help keep your mouth healthy and to keep you smiling confidently.

After tooth removal, you may want to consider filling in your gap with a restoration, including a porcelain crown or implant. We are happy to improve your smile and look forward to talking to you about these options.

If you have a damaged or aching tooth or just haven’t had a preventative cleaning in a while, set up an appointment by calling our Plano, TX office at 972-905-9266 or filling out our online appointment form. If your teenager or you have never had your wisdom teeth pulled, you can also set up an appointment to see whether you have impacted wisdom tooth for extraction.
