Root Canals

You may need a root canal if you have:

  • a cavity that’s too deep for a filling
  • an infection or abscess as a result of your deep cavity
  • a broken, chipped, cracked, or otherwise injured tooth

What Is a Root Canal?

When you have any of the problems listed above, you can develop inflammation and disease in your tooth. When we perform a root canal, we’ll remove this damaged portion of your tooth known as the pulp, which includes the nerves, tissues, and blood vessels. This prevents us from having to pull your tooth.

When we remove the pulp during your root canal, it takes along with it the nerve, blood, and nutrient supply to your tooth. This will cause your tooth to become brittle and prone to fracturing. To prevent your tooth from further damage, we can restore it with a custom-made full crown.

Is a Root Canal Painful?

Root canals are usually simple procedures that take one to three appointments depending on your case. Many people have no symptoms after treatment, while some may experience minor discomfort, sensitivity to hot and or cold, sensitivity to pressure, and swelling. If you experience swelling, please call our office to see if you need medication to provide you with relief. Otherwise, be gentle on your tooth during your healing process, and your symptoms should disappear within a couple of days.

If you have more than one appointment, we may use a temporary filling to seal the tooth and protect it between visits.
